Îlot, is a cooking area and a gathering spot. It is a furniture piece that complements our kitchen, with a countertop, two shelves and a composter. The origin of the design comes from the constant research of new and more environmentally friendly materials.
The countertop and the stool legs are made in cast aluminum that can be infinitely recycled without losing its properties. The recycling process only needs 5% of the original energy consumption, which saves 9 tons of CO2 emissions.
The composter able to reduce our organic waste, its integrated by two containers that processes the organic wastes. Made of ceramics, a material that keeps compost fresh and humid.
The shelves are made of a material we named Paper Terrazzo a recycled paper pulp, this material is extracted from a renewable source. When we recycle it to create a more resistant and hard component we give the material a second and more lasting life instead of using it only for a short period of time as newspaper or writing paper. When it reaches the end of its life cycle it can be easily degraded.
Îlot is entirely produce in the Mexico City’s metropolitan area, in different family workshops and factories. By encouraging a local production we reduce fuel consumption and CO 2 emissions in transport, and we also enhance the local economy.
With îlot we want to demonstrate that we can change the way we design to generate the conditions of change to a more sustainable future.
